Iapos;ve never done more work for a convention and felt so unprepared at the same time. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Iapos;ll be in the dealers room rather than the artist alley so I want to be more professional. Maybe its just because my life has been so busy that it only feels like Iapos;ve done a lot of work. Whatever it is, while Iapos;m excited like I normally get before a convention, Iapos;m definitely a bit nervous.
This was a convention that I did horribly at last year. It was due to a lot of problems - little foot traffic in the artist alley, not enough affordable merchandise or a good variety, and Iapos;m a webcomic artist and not an anime artist. So Iapos;ve tackled each one of these problems thusly:
1.) Iapos;m in the dealers room this year. In any convention, this is where the majority of the traffic heads. Not only that, but I chose a booth that is right across from the entrance, so people canapos;t help but see me.
2.) Merchandise was a bit tricky. My more popular stuff seems to be my non-Bardsworth artwork (my fairy artwork), so I tried to up the ante on that stuff because I figured if I can lure them to the table with that, I have their ears and can pitch Bardsworth to them at the same time.
As for variety and affordability, I have some low tier merchandise (bookmarks, postcard prints, pencil sketches, and buttons), middle tier merchandise (inked drawings and color prints) and my high tier merchandise (the books). Iapos;m also offering commissions, but will most likely decline the drawing of fan art.
3.) I canapos;t really cure the ill that is my not being an anime artist, but as I mentioned above I will be selling sketches and will do commissions. I will also be drawing right out in the open. In the past Iapos;ve kind of done that behind the table, but I think Iapos;m over my fear of displaying my drawing talents now. Besides, people are curious - if they see someone drawing they will wander over to watch. If I can get their attention away from the anime DVDs and Pocky.
So Iapos;m excited, nervous, apprehensive, and curious as to how itapos;ll all play out. As always, I will bring the camera and there will be a con report next week.
Wish me luck
